Below are the precious dogs currently with us. Some are healthy and just waiting for their new family to find them, while others are special needs. If someone falls in love with, is willing to take a chance on and wants to adopt any one of our special needs pups, we are always open to discussion. We promise to fully disclose any significant health issues we are aware of and current medical needs. We will even provide you with their vet records, so you can make a completely informed decision. We strongly believe that no senior deserves to die feeling alone, unloved, and unwanted in a cold shelter environment. We do realize that end-of-life care is costly and our future growth relies heavily on donations. Every cent matters and is guaranteed to go towards their medical needs. Please consider donating if you can - to help us help them.

ADOPTION APPLICATION | FOSTER APPLICATION

  • Heddy

New arrival. She has been living in a house alone for 7 months. Neighbors were feeding her and Ziva. Her owner was admitted into a nursing facility. Although understandably frightened, she is friendly. Intact female. Three years old.

  • Lola

Only 4 - 6 months old. Abandoned in a parking lot on Christmas Eve. Up to date on vaccines. Spay scheduled for the 28th.

  • Ziva

New arrival. Found living in the house with Heddy. Six or seven years old. Spayed. Up to date on vaccines. Also frightened, but blending in with our pack rather quickly. She’s the quiet one of the two.

  • Buttons

This little guy is a recent arrival. Found wandering around Brown’s Island and surprisingly wasn’t claimed. He’s young. Our guess is that he’s only one year old. He loves other dogs and plays all day. He is however, scared of human contact. He screams with fear, urinates, and tries to run. He will need someone patient who understands a sweet yet traumatized little dog. With time, he will be a fantastic pet.

    Adoption fee $300

  • Suzie

Suzie is a gentle little girl who arrived at Miko’s Sanctuary in 2022 with slight neurological issues. She occasionally walks in circles and because she is not slightly bothered by it, we won’t be either. She was adopted rather quickly two years ago, and was returned recently to us when her family went through a divorce. No rescue likes to see this, because it only adds to the dogs confusion. Because of her previous return, we will be selective when screening applications. Although she’s not playful, she gets along with other dogs as long as they respect her space.

We believe she is approximately 10 - 12, and weighs 20 pounds. She is spayed, chipped, and up to date on vaccines.

    Her adoption fee is $300.

  • Chloe

    SPECIAL NEED

Chloe is a new arrival here at Miko’s Sanctuary. She’s listed as approximately 10 - 12 years old, but I believe she’s older. While we’re still getting to know this little nugget, we have already learned she is a sweet velcro pup. She requires lifelong medication for arthritis and aqequan injections - anything to make this precious girl comfortable.

  • Myza

Myza is a gorgeous little girl who weighs in at approximately 18 pounds and is 8 - 10 years old. No health issues that we’re aware of. She loves people. Still playful but will calm down the minute you do. She’s not needy, but will attach quickly to her new owner. She wants to be loved and be by your side. She is spayed, up to date on all vaccines. We’re still getting to know Myza, but we do believe she would do best as an only dog, and will update this post as we learn more.

    Adoption fee $300.

  • Jenny

Jenny is believed to be 18 but you would never guess that meeting her. She is a carefree little Jack Russell who was recently surrendered at a local pet store. She is understandably confused, but does well with dogs who respect her space. To be an only dog your entire life, and then to suddenly find yourself in a strange house with 18 other dogs can be overwhelming. Other than food aggression towards other dogs, we’ve only seen a lonely little girl who wants to be loved. Although she desperately needs a dental and definitely has signs of arthritis indicative to her age, she is otherwise healthy. We will schedule a dental for her once we’ve collected enough donations to cover it.

  • Queenie

Queenie is an older lady at approximately 16. She waddles around the house just as content as they come. Her back legs don’t want to cooperate, and arthritis is severe. Promising full disclosure, we have to tell you that this lovely little girl is incontinent. Her wish for life is simple - good food, clean bedding, and love. Don’t worry Queenie, we got you covered!

  • Kelly

    SPECIAL NEEDS

Kelly is a Miniature Pinscher mix who is approximately 12 yrs old. She came to the sanctuary with several masses on her body. Through the amazing support of our community, we were able to raise the funds to have all masses removed in July 22. Kelly also has an enlarged heart and will need lifelong medication to help her heart pump more efficiently.

Kelly is currently in foster and thriving! She is a complete love bug , good with the other dogs, and seeks attention. She is house-trained and crate trained.

Support for Kelly’s ongoing care and medications can be made through PayPal.

  • Emmy

    Emmy

Emmy has been with us on and off for almost 6 years. Emmy is the typical chi - she barks at strangers and either loves you or hates you. I actually fostered her back in 2017 for Richmond Animal League and she was adopted out within months. The family later decided not to keep her, and I couldn’t stand the thought of her being returned to a shelter environment. Because she was so scared and fractious when they first got her, Richmond Animal League agreed that to rehome her yet again would be devastating to her. I guess that would make Emmy our first official sanctuary dog!

  • Ruby

    SPECIAL NEEDS

Ruby is a sweet little girl who arrived here wanting nothing more than a warm bed and some good food. She is on pimobendan and enalapril for a heart murmur but is not showing any symptoms of heart disease. She has no teeth, so soft diet only. She’s a tired little girl who sleeps most of the day and is just a pleasure to have here at our sanctuary.

  • Timmy

    SPECIAL NEEDS

Timmy arrived here in 2022 with horrible skin issues and testicular cancer. The tumor was removed and our vet is confident that they got all the margins. Timmy is a fighter and has come a long way in recovery. Timmy doesn’t hear well. We also recently learned that Timmy has an enlarged heart and will need lifelong medications (pimobendan, enalapril) to help his heart pump more efficiently.

Medications are our biggest monthly expense here at Miko’s Sanctuary. Please help us if you can.

  • Memaw

Memaw is a sweet little old lady who just wants to rest after years of breeding. She is approximately 17 years old. She is spayed. I promised her she could rest here and would be comfortable, spoiled and pampered until the end of her days. We give her daily supplements and pain relief meds to help her with the stiffness of arthritis. She loves everyone and while being held will place her head against your neck for comfort.

  • Maggie

    SPECIAL NEEDS

Maggie is a calm little girl who wants to please. Who can resist her adorable snaggle smile! At approximately 12 - 14 years old, she does have a heart arrhythmia that causes her to occasionally faint. Lifelong medications help keep the fainting under control. She is also deaf. Her foster mom has described her as delightfully silly, and an easy girl to take care of. She also said Maggie doesn’t miss a thing going on around her.

  • Peanut

    Peanut

Peanut is a 16 year old Min Pin / Chihuahua mix. He is the perfect little dog. Although he is not fond of being picked up, he shows he loves you in other ways. He is healthy for his age, but we have recently noticed that he is struggling with his vision.

Peanut loves being with the other dogs here and living life with the pack. After spending almost three years with us here at the Sanctuary, we’ve decided to keep this sweet southern gentleman as an official sanctuary dog.

  • Peppe

    SPECIAL NEEDS

Peppe arrived at the sanctuary in September 2022 already coughing and in congestive heart failure. Here we are, over three years later, and he is still going strong. Amazing what medications can do to keep him comfortable. As long as he doesn’t give up, we will be right there with him. He’s a sweet little guy who loves to be with others.

Would you like to help? Peppe’s medications cost over $100 monthly. Please consider donating towards his medications through PayPal.

  • Casper

    SPECIAL NEEDS

Casper is a very gentle, tolerant and friendly dog once trust is developed. His tail wags and he gives you kisses when picked up. Please note that while he does allow us at the Sanctuary to pick him up, it will take time for him to feel comfortable enough to let someone else pick him up. Casper is a Shih Tzu mix. Other than being blind, he is in good health. He has glaucoma and sadly is not a candidate for corrective surgery. Casper self-soothes by walking in circles to calm himself down when he feels alone or in a strange environment. Because we have had him for so long without interest, he is now a permanent resident of our sanctuary.

  • Theodore

    Theodore

    SPECIAL NEEDS

Theodore is our longest resident and has been with us for over three years. He came in with several other dogs who have long ago been adopted. He is a beagle / basset hound mix. We jokingly and lovingly call him our big baby because he is scared of his own shadow. This boy was traumatized beyond words by the way he was neglected by his past owner, seized by the county, and then ending up in a dirty county shelter.

He has never emotionally recovered and it took him months to trust us. Because of this, we will consider him a sanctuary pet unless a very special adopter comes along. We don't want to put him through another emotional roller coaster and we think he deserves stability at his age. Theodore has allergies, requires a prescription diet, and cytopoint injections every few months.

  • Sophie

Sophie arrived here with Shamas as a bonded pair. The deep connection she had with him was almost indescribable. She was completely devastated when Shamas passed and is still grieving. It is believed that he was not only her rock, he was also her father.

Sophie is incredibly shy, and even after being here for quite some time is still uncomfortable with any human touch. We’re hoping with time, she will find confidence, feel safe and enjoy the life that she has here.
